FASNY has designated April 24-25 as the 12th annual RecruitNY Weekend.
âIn response to COVID-19, many firehouses across the state are choosing to organize a virtual open house or conduct other digital outreach in an effort to attract new volunteers,â states a news release from the organization. âSome firehouses, based upon local conditions, may still elect to open their doors to the public.â
The FASNY statement points out that âtodayâs firefighters are responding to more calls now than ever before, and these calls are increasingly diverse, between medical emergencies and COVID-19 calls to flooded basements, downed power lines, automobile accidents, and of course for fires. The pandemic has also added challenges surrounding training and new member recruitment.â
GREAT BEND â One person inside a trailer that was engulfed in flames Friday morning escaped through his bedroom window, and first responders later saved two dogs.
Nearly 10 fire departments responded to 35631 Jackson II Road shortly after 8 a.m. Friday for reports of a trailer fire.
Great Bend Fire Chief Mark Pomerville said there were flames coming from the front and back windows by the time they arrived on scene. Crews were able to make a rather quick hit on the flames, saving much of the exterior.
He said two people live there but only one person was inside at the time of the blaze. The man inside escaped from his bedroom window. He was evaluated in an ambulance shortly after. It was unclear if he was taken to a hospital.

A Celebration of Life will be held the following day, Wednesday April 14th, 2021 at the Massena Elks Lodge No. 1702 located at 20 Bower Street, Massena from 2:30 to 4:30 PM. Those who will be in attendance are required to wear face coverings, and practice social distancing.
