While residing there she raised two Pinto ponies: Smokie and Daisy along with all the other animals. The horses were her favorite to take to horse shows and ride into town just to show them off. Imagine that! Camp Drum acquired the land to expand the base prior to World War II. She moved to Massena in the early 1950’s with her husband Richard A. Slate and their five children to take advantage of the jobs created by the Saint Lawrence Seaway being built during that time.

Champion chooses Good Energy to administer program

WEST CARTHAGE — Following a public hearing at the February meeting, the town of Champion board passed a local law naming a Community Choice Aggregation Energy Program administrator. As explained by Javier Barrios from Good Energy, the local law authorizes the municipality to collect data from suppliers with the assistance of a Public Service Commission-approved administrator. The purpose of the data collection is to review costs for the bulk purchase of electricity and natural gas in order to contract to purchase the commodities on behalf of the residents of the town if a savings can be recognized. The adoption of the local law does not obligate the town board to enter into a contract to purchase the commodities. If a contract was signed, residents would continue to receive their billing from National Grid. (WWNY) - A chemical fire at a defunct paper mill between the villages of Carthage and West Carthage has been put out, according to local fire departments. It had been burning since last week. On Monday, the Carthage codes department condemned the old Island Paper Company mill. The chemical that was burning has not been identified, but air testing continues to show no evidence of danger to the public.
