Implementation of Article 244A, which prescribes the formation of an autonomous State comprising certain tribal areas of Assam and creation of local legislature or Council of Ministers, has been a demand across three hill districts Karbi Anglong, West Karbi Anglong and Dima Hasao since the 1980s.

In a written reply to a query by Leader of Opposition Debabrata Saikia, Parliamentary Affairs Minister Chandra Mohan Patowary said that these 56 cases of land encroachments were reported across 11 districts since January 1 this year. The highest 17 cases were reported from Cachar, which faced violent clashes between the people of Assam and Mizoram, Patowary said on behalf of Chief Minister Sarbananda Sonowal, who also holds the Home portfolio.

Parliamentary Affairs Minister Chandra Mohan Patowary, replying to a question of opposition leader Debabrata Saikia, said that neighbouring Arunachal Pradesh, Meghalaya, Nagaland and Mizoram intruded into Assam s territory in 11 districts. To maintain the status quo or to recover the invaded lands, the state government has written many letters to the respective states and the Centre and held meetings with those states, Patowary said on behalf of Chief Minister Sarbananda Sonowal, who holds the Home portfolio.
