Altogether 1040 members of five militant outfits operating in undivided Karbi Anglong district in Assam laid down arms here on Tuesday evening, two days ahead of signing a peace accord in the presence of Union home minister Amit Shah. Shah is scheduled to visit the poll-bound state on February 25.
This is the third major “mainstreaming” of rebels since 2020. Altogether 1,615 members from three National Democratic Front of Bodoland (NDFB) factions had laid down arms in January 2020, three days after the signing of the tripartite Bodo Accord. This was followed by laying down of arms by 64 rebels belonging to four outfits, the big catch being Ulfa(I)’s deputy commander-in-chief Drishti Rajkhowa.

GUWAHATI: A team of senior officers from the Election Commission of India (ECI), headed by Dharmendra Sharma, Director General ECI, visited Assam to review the progress of election preparedness of the State for the ensuing General Election to the Assam Legislative Assembly.
He was accompanied by Narendra N. Butolia, Senior Principal Secretary and Ajoy Kumar Verma, Secretary ECI.

The incident took place at Jengkha area near Kheroni in West Karbi Anglong where miscreants pelted stones at cops and damaged property at Jengkha police station after the cops detained two local youths, sources said.

GUWAHATI: Prime Minister Narendra Modi is set to distribute 1.06 lakh land pattas/allotment certificates to indigenous people of Assam.
Notably, PM Modi who will be in Assam s Sivasagar district will visit Jerenga Pathar, a historical place connected with Assam s erstwhile Ahom kingdom for the distribution ceremony on January 23.
Speaking to media, Assam chief minister Sarbananda Sonowal said that no government in Assam has ever taken such a people-friendly initiative in the past.
