The Day - Camp Harkness and vaccines, yesterday and tomorrow - News from southeastern Connecticut

Published July 18. 2021 12:01AM  By Lisa McGinley On the snowy early morning when I got my first dose of the Pfizer anti-COVID vaccine, the wide open vaccination room was dotted with socially distanced people who qualified, by their age bracket, for immunization. This wasn t my first time in a mass vaccination site. I mentioned to the nurse who was administering my shot that on another early morning, but on a steamy day in August, my father and I stood in line in the Hall High School auditorium in West Hartford for 7-year-old me to get the second of my three polio shots. Funny, she said. A lot of people have been saying that same thing this morning.

Henry Flagler s retirement plan: develop Florida s east coast Would Miami be as exotic if it had been named Flagler? It’s hard to say, but the reality is, in the late 19th century, south Floridians nearly named their port city for the railroad magnate who made easy access there possible. “He was offered to have Miami named after him. He didn’t want that,” said Edwin L. Lamont, docent for the Henry Morrison Flagler Museum in Palm Beach. “It was for two reasons. One, he truly was a humble man. I think the other reason is, this was the time of the yellow press, and to have your name on things like that, it was just more opportunity for the yellow press to take a shot at you.”

A Stroll Down Memory Lane

News from 10 years ago: A tanker truck carrying a load of oil overturned on Ga. Highway 16, on the bridge over I-75 on Thursday, Dec. 23, spilling its load down the highway entrance ramp and down into the grassy right-of-way. There were no injuries in the accident, which closed the ramp for much of the day for cleanup. A veterans memorial park planned for a small triangle of city property in downtown Jackson would have flags from all branches of the military, granite benches, a statue and a memorial wall, according to preliminary plans presented to the Jackson City Council on Dec. 21.
