LEELANAU COUNTY, Mich. – Human remains, which are believed to date back to prehistoric times, were found in Sleeping Bear Dunes National Lakeshore.
An area resident found the remains on the shoreline of Lake Michigan in the summer of 2017.
The remains were returned to the National Lakeshore in February 2019 and then sent to Western Michigan University. The remains were analyzed using non-invasive osteological analysis.

It’s nothing new; the Indians join the Washington Redskins, the University of North Dakota Fighting Sioux, and the William & Mary Tribe (formerly the “Indians.”) President Donald Trump tweeted that it was “cancel culture at work.”
It’s more than that. It’s about power and racial collective interests. If it is offensive to have Indian mascots, is it offensive to have white ones? The answer is that it depends.

EMPIRE, MICH. For the first time in Sleeping Bear Dunes National Lakeshore’s history, human remains likely dating back to prehistoric times have been found within the park.
The remains were originally discovered in 2017 by a visitor walking along the beach at an undisclosed location in the National Lakeshore, Superintendent Scott Tucker said.
Tucker said it’s probable that erosion caused by Lake Michigan’s high water levels in recent years may have exposed the remains.
The visitor took the remains out of the park and then returned them to park officials more than a year later, at which time the remains were taken to the Leelanau County medical examiner’s office before being transferred to a Western Michigan University lab for osteological analysis.
