Prehistoric human remains found along Michigan shoreline

Prehistoric human remains found along Michigan shoreline Updated Dec 15, 2020; Facebook Share EMPIRE, MICH. For the first time in Sleeping Bear Dunes National Lakeshore’s history, human remains likely dating back to prehistoric times have been found within the Michigan park. The remains were originally discovered in 2017 by a visitor walking along the beach at an undisclosed location in the National Lakeshore, Superintendent Scott Tucker said. Tucker said it’s probable that erosion caused by Lake Michigan’s high water levels in recent years may have exposed the remains. The visitor took the remains out of the park and then returned them to park officials more than a year later, at which time the remains were taken to the Leelanau County medical examiner’s office before being transferred to a Western Michigan University lab for osteological analysis.
