Seguin) – After 56 years of delivering smiles and helping to lift up spirits, a local business has chosen to close its doors for good.
Kolbe Flower Shop, a staple on North Austin Street, will be closing down the family operated business this weekend.
For years, Kolbe Flower Shop has been a part of the thousands of celebrations in and around Seguin and even across the country bringing their custom floral designs, balloons and other special gifts to the respective occasion.
It was in 1964, when Alfred and Mary Kolbe first began the operation. Son, Tim Kolbe says his parents not only established but maintained a tradition of personalized customer service over the course of those years.

Ella Amanda Kolbe passed away peacefully on Christmas Eve morning of the year 2020. She was born March 14,1927, in the small farming community of Hancock on the Upper Peninsula of Michigan to Finnish Immigrants Laina Rusi and Alex Harju. She had three siblings, brother Jerry and sisters Louella and Florence. She spent most of her formative years on a farm in Northern Wisconsin. There she learned the value of hard work and perseverance. She also developed a love for animals and other living things and the importance of clean air and water. She graduated from Wisconsin State University-Superior in 1949 and moved to New York City to live with her sister and modeled for company advertisements.
Column: Christians must look to Mary to effectively challenge anti-Semitism

Christians are preparing for Christmas. As we do every year, we are asked to remember one controversial person: Mary. We are asked to hover like the angelic visitor, quavering in momentary hesitation before this young girl. It is a moment captured most wonderfully by many artistic renderings. An angel bows before Mary.
I adore these Renaissance images. They make it clear how important this is. The richness of color of Mary’s dress. The symmetrical architecture behind her. The angel, clothed in glory. One picture in particular, Fra Angelico’s painting now on display in Madrid, is worth looking at closely. Even the ceiling is magnificent, stars shining brightly on a deep navy night. Mary herself has an open book on her lap, her hands are crossed and her expression is perplexed, as if she is reeling.
