Catholic schools across West Virginia plan to fully participate in the state’s upcoming Hope Scholarship program, which will create educational savings accounts for eligible families to move from public schools to homeschooling or private or parochial schools.
Gov. Jim Justice signed the scholarship program into law in March. Initially, families with children entering kindergarten or transferring out of public schools and into homeschooling or private schools can apply for ESAs for the 2022-23 school year.
“The Hope Scholarship Program can truly serve as a blessing for parents who seek a Catholic education for their children,” said the Most Reverend Mark E. Brennan, Bishop of Wheeling-Charleston. “This program empowers parents and families to make decisions about how best to educate their children and in so doing is in keeping with a key tenet of the Catholic faith: that parents are the primary educators of their children.”

WHEELING Families of Catholic school students, and of some former Catholic school students, in West Virginia will get an extra helping hand thanks to a $1.2 million investment from the Diocese of Wheeling-Charleston.
Bishop Mark Brennan announced the investment Monday, which will help families enrolled in the diocese’s 24 Catholic schools around the state. It also will help those who had to leave Catholic school in the last year due to financial strains from the COVID-19 pandemic.
These qualifying families, regardless of religious affiliation, will receive $250 per child in grades PK-12 in the parochial school system to be used for tuition and fees during the 2021-2022 school year. This grant is in addition to any tuition assistance for which families are eligible, including the Diocesan Tuition Assistance Program for Catholic families; and funds granted at the local parish and school level.
