The owner of a long-time Sault Ste. Marie business vows he’ll keep getting tough on crime at his store after a man tried to take merchandise worth several thousand dollars from his Steelton business.
The suspect was stopped by Herb Lash, Jr., and his father. The senior Lash was hurt in the incident.

Herb Lash, Sr., confronted a suspicious customer shortly before Christmas at H.R. Lash clothing store on John Street.
The man allegedly put seven men’s winter jackets in a duffle bag that he’d stashed in the back of his jacket and was trying to leave the business. As Sault Ste. Marie and communities across the Algoma District reopen, concern remains about the spread of COVID-19, and now, the spread of the more contagious variants that have been identified across Canada.
Mayor Christian Provenzano shares that concern with public health experts.

Any St. Mary residents who have not been paying city taxes may want to stock up on bottled water and flashlight batteries.
The St. Mary Board of Aldermen passed a bill on first reading during its Feb. 11 meeting that calls for the city to terminate utility services for any residents in arrears on their city tax bills.
The ordinance will get a second reading at the March 11 meeting, after which the aldermen will vote on it.
“The bill’s going to lay over for 30 days,” Mayor Carlton Wyatt said. “It’s going to be a controversial bill, probably. People have the right to read it and decipher it and we have a right to explain it.”
