LYNCHBURG, Va. – Battling the coronavirus pandemic on the frontlines for more than a year, Centra Health honored its caregivers on Saturday
Lynchburg Mayor MaryJane Dolan declared June 26 as Centra Caregiver Appreciation Day and in a virtual fundraising gala, Centra Health recognized the challenges 7,500 healthcare workers overcame to save lives during the coronavirus pandemic.
Centra Health Senior VP and Chief Transformation Officer Michael Elliott said their sacrifices are why the community is able to still stand today.
“You were supposed to come in and perform your role and not know if you might contract that disease yourself and take it home to your family,” he said. “I mean those are the things that people dealt with. It sounds abstract but it was real.”
Lynchburg City Council on Thursday released the names of the eight candidates it will interview for three seats on the school board that will be vacant June 30.

Leighton B. Dodd, a former Lynchburg city councilman and mayor who just this month was recognized locally with a day named in his honor for his stance against racial inequality, died peacefully Sunday, his family said. He was 90 years old.

He attended Lynchburg College after returning from the war, graduating in 1956. Dodd was elected to city council in 1970 and served as mayor of Lynchburg from 1972 to 1976.

This initiative continued action based on the citywide salary study and would bring all of these targeted full-time employees up to their market pay rate.
But after a projected increase in city revenues for fiscal year 2022, and a 5% salary increase approved by the state for all state-funded city positions, staff recommended council implement an across-the-board 5% increase instead.
Lynchburg City Council has again voted to maintain its current real estate property tax rate, one that could have some residents facing higher bills. The 2021 reassessment showed an increase
