Mayor Tom Henry said he wants the community to know that public works is more than sidewalks and curbs.
“It s also bike lanes, and it s also a tremendous infrastructure underneath the streets of this community. We have all kinds of water pipes and a number of other assets to our community that most people never see, but they are a part of our entire industry,” he said Wednesday after a news conference.

Mayor, city officials celebrate green infrastructure

Collaboration and green infrastructure were celebrated Wednesday morning by Mayor Tom Henry and public works officials.
The city press conference was held in the parking lot of Purdue Fort Wayne housing that faces Hobson Road, which was used as an example of collaboration for green infrastructure.
Through the multi-phase project, the road was reconfigured to include bike lanes and sidewalks. About five feet of greenspace was added along the roadway as well, which allows for the inclusion of planted bioswales where the grades allow.
Editorial
GOP hypocritical in politicizing public health
To no one s surprise, the Indiana General Assembly s Republican supermajority voted Monday to override the governor s veto of a bill restricting the authority of local health officials in a public health crisis.
The vote gives county commissioners, in most cases, the final say on restrictions now issued by the county health commissioner and raises the risk of critical decisions shaped not by medical expertise but by popular opinion.
The veto override immediately voids any local COVID-19 restriction more stringent than a state order. Gov. Eric Holcomb had wisely rejected the measure, noting after Monday s mostly party-line vote that health officials are appointed by elected officials.
