Local focus helps keep partisanship in check KAREN FRANCISCO | The Journal Gazette University researchers released a report last month on an intriguing experiment: Can newspaper opinion pages reduce polarization by focusing on local news? The researchers conclude it can: “Local newspapers can hold back the rising tide of political division in America by turning away from the partisan battles in Washington and focusing their opinion page on local issues,” according to the report s abstract. “When a local newspaper in California dropped national politics from its opinion page, the resulting space filled with local writers and issues. We use a preregistered analysis plan to show that after this quasi-experiment, politically engaged people did not feel as far apart from members of the opposing party, compared to those in a similar community whose newspaper did not change.”

Trek the Trails bike rides resume as record hit again Journal Gazette Health-conscious residents have outdone themselves, again, setting another record in March for trail use, the city of Fort Wayne announced Thursday. Residents last month used the local trail system more than any March on record, with 78,679 counts logged. Almost all of the trails in the nearly 125-mile trail system experienced an increase in use, a news release said. The second highest March trail count was in 2012, with 50,824 counts logged. In March 2020, when events were canceled due to the beginning of the coronavirus pandemic, 46,759 trail counts were logged. The city also announced Trek the Trails family-friendly bike rides have returned for the season, offering residents even more opportunities to explore and enjoy the outdoors. Rides depart at 6:10 p.m. Participants are asked to wear helmets and bring water.

One example comes from Fort Wayne, where City Council members just approved a $16 million subsidy for “Project Mastodon” – a warehouse whose operator refused to be publicly identified. City leaders, including Mayor Tom Henry, rejected requests to divulge the recipient of the corporate handout, citing their signing of nondisclosure agreements. Even some City Council members who hadn t signed refused to divulge the company to voters.
