Planned Parenthood, ACLU File Lawsuit to Block Lubbock, Texas Ordinance Outlawing Abortion

Planned Parenthood of Greater Texas and the American Civil Liberties Union (ACLU) of Texas have filed a federal lawsuit against the City of Lubbock after its citizens voted May 1 to become a “sanctuary city for the unborn.”
The abortion industry giant and the civil rights organization claim the ordinance Lubbock’s citizens approved to make abortion illegal within the city’s limits is unconstitutional.
“The Constitution of the United States guarantees the right to have an abortion,” the complaint states and continues:

Council approves election results, Lubbock to become Sanctuary City for the Unborn
The Lubbock City Council approved the results of the May 1 election during its council meeting on Tuesday.
The Sanctuary City for the Unborn ordinance was overwhelmingly approved by Lubbock voters, with about 62.5% of the 34,260 voters supporting the ordinance.
On election night, Mayor Dan Pope released a statement saying, On behalf of the city council, our duty as elected officials is to begin the process in adding the approved ordinance to the City of Lubbock Code of Ordinances, as directed by the Lubbock City Charter.
History of Lubbock Police Department on display at Citizens Tower
Five display cabinets containing artifacts and photographs documenting the Lubbock Police Department s century of history were installed for display Tuesday in the lobby of Citizens Tower.
An unveiling ceremony on Tuesday afternoon came ahead of the city council meeting where council members honored the police department s 100th anniversary.
The artifacts included Lubbock Police Department badges and patches throughout the years and photos of Lubbock police officers working crime scenes or in the community.
Also on display is the official document commissioning C.S Middleton as the City of Lubbock s first police chief on May 6, 1921.

The City of Lubbock and Lubbock County are set to receive $116,899,711 in federal funding from the American Rescue Plan.
On Monday, May10th, President Joe Biden announced that under the American Rescue Plan, over $350 billion total would be sent out to states and local governments. Texas is set to receive around $1.4 billion.
Lubbock Mayor Dan Pope said in a statement in regards to these expected funds that the City was looking at the guidelines in the plan so that the money would be allocated in ways that address critical needs in the community.
