2020 Year in Review -NOVEMBER : The Prowers Journal

  There were 21 candidates on the November 3 rd Colorado ballot for President including a slot for any write-in candidate. The unofficial tally for Colorado is 1,631,018 for Biden and 1,220,661 for the incumbent, Donald Trump. Prowers County residents cast 1,438 ballots for Joe Biden on the Democratic ticket and 3,977 for Trump for the GOP. There was an 81% voter turnout for Prowers County with 5,545 ballots cast from 6,840 eligible voters. Former Colorado Governor John Hickenlooper received 1,565,775 statewide ballots against the incumbent Republican U.S. Senator, Cory Gardner’s 1,280,289. Prowers County residents cast 3,933 for Gardner for a second, four-year term and 1,417 for Hickenlooper. Ken Buck, the republican candidate for the state’s 4th Congressional District, defeated challenger and political newcomer, Ike McCorkle by a vote of 162,263 to 262,621.   Buck also won the county with 3,976 versus the tally for McCorkle at 1,269.

City of Lamar Enacting Safety Measures to Deal with Recent COVID Surge The Prowers County Public Health and Environment department issued a press release on Thursday, October 22nd, stating a death occurred 10/21/2020 associated with COVID-19. The person was a resident of the nursing facility experiencing the outbreak in Lamar. The process of death investigation to determine whether this person died of COVID-19 or with COVID-19 is multi-tiered and goes through local, state and federal agencies. Lamar Mayor, Kirk Crespin, announced on Tuesday, the 20th via facebook that the county is now at risk of going to Stage 3 restrictions unless the outbreak of the pandemic can be brought under control over the next two weeks. Although Crespin said he does not like the idea of mandated mask wearing measures, “We aren’t doing enough on our own,” he stated in light of the recent outbreak of 35 new cases and the death of a resident of Lamar Estates. Changes in Prowers County Commodity Distribution for April 14th Due to the impact of COVID-19 in our communities, the Commodity Foods Distribution will still be held at 8am on Tuesday, April 14th, but with some safeguards for everyone’s health and protection. Darren Glover, TEFAP Coordinator for Prowers County has stated that in April, all sites will have drive-up distribution only. NO Walk-Ups will be allowed due to social distancing requirements. Each individual will not be required to sign for their boxes, but must still show a picture ID beforehand. This includes the Senior Box at the Lamar Distribution; a picture ID will be required.

City Council Conducts Video-Zoom Meeting  The council adopted Resolution No. 20-04-01 as well as No. 20-04-02 pertaining to measures taken to deal with the Coronavirus pandemic.  The first resolution allows for the conduct of all city public meetings to be held by electronic means as a way of maintaining safe, social distancing.  The second resolution is a Declaration of State of Emergency in the City of Lamar due to COVID-19.   The declaration ensures that all units of government maintain the ability and option to any emergency funding from FEMA or other aid that would become available.  Lance Clark took his oath of office as City Attorney, administered by Judge Lane Porter.  Clark is replacing Garth Nieschburg and is employed at the Steerman Law Offices in Lamar.  Clark’s first charge of duties will be to rework a council motion, initiated by Mayor Kirk Crespin, which is a hardship deferral sales tax program.  It would be a sales tax deferral which would assist those l

Syracuse Dairy Adding Beef Cattle to Holly Operation  The Prowers County Planning Commission, following a public hearing on Wednesday, January 15, 2020, approved the request from Syracuse Dairy in Holly for an amendment to their Special Use Permit.  The dairy intends to add about 20,000 head of beef cattle on their 610 acre operation south of Holly.  The dairy consists of 8,000 head of dairy cows and the heifer operation has 14,500 head.  After additional discussion and a reading of the recommendation from the Land Use Office by Michelle Heigel, the commissioners voted unanimously in favor of the amendment.  Some areas addressed in the recommendations determined the special use will not adversely affect public health, safety or welfare.
