Holyoke Public Library director wants livable wage for workers

HOLYOKE – While the nation’s workers “Fight for $15,” Holyoke Public Library staff simply want a livable wage.
Maria Pagan, the library’s director, released a statement before Tuesday’s Ordinance Committee virtual meeting chaired by City Councilor Rebecca Lisi.
The committee culled through a 2014 salary study conducted by an outside firm that called for higher wages, reclassifying positions, and improved compensation for nonunion city employees, elected officials and contracted workers.
Lisi said the study also focused on retaining city employees, especially department heads who often move onto other communities for better opportunities. Training a new employee rather than retaining the current one bleeds city resources.

The birth of her business is thanks to her dedicated work ethic, the MGM Culinary Arts Institute at Holyoke Community College, and Holyoke SPARKS’s EforAll (Entrepreneurship for All) program.
Like Beaconsfield, Pointe Claire and Sainte Anne-de-Bellevue, the city of Dollard-des-Ormeaux is also giving its taxpayers a break by deferring municipal payments due to COVID 19.
âThe first payment is now due on May 26 and the second on August 25,â said city spokesperson Natalia Correa.
âWe wanted to give people a break, as many of them have been heavily impacted by the pandemic financially,â said Mayor Alex Bottausci.
Due to the pandemic, âIt should be noted that certain payment methods have changed because of the pandemic. To avoid an outbreak at City Hall, the service counter will only accept payment in cash or debit, and only by appointment,â the mayor noted.
Holyoke City Treasurer Sandra Smith tenders resignation ‘with heavy heart’

HOLYOKE City Treasurer Sandra Smith notified Mayor Alex B. Morse she would resign her position Feb. 26. “With a heavy heart and some serious soul searching,” Smith said she would not finish her current, four-year term.
Smith said the office had taken a toll on her health, and retirement seemed the best option. In 2010, City Treasurer Jon Lumbra appointed Smith assistant treasurer, which she held for five years.
“We immediately got to work addressing the major past audit issues that were present in the office and successfully worked together to create a solid team that made the office more efficient and fiscally responsible,” Smith stated.
