Maria Pagan, the library’s director, released a statement before Tuesday’s Ordinance Committee virtual meeting chaired by City Councilor Rebecca Lisi. The committee culled through a 2014 salary study conducted by an outside firm that called for higher wages, reclassifying positions, and improved compensation for nonunion city employees, elected officials and contracted workers. Lisi said the study also focused on retaining city employees, especially department heads who often move onto other communities for better opportunities. Training a new employee rather than retaining the current one bleeds city resources.

DDO latest WI municipality to postpone tax payments

Morse she would resign her position Feb. 26. “With a heavy heart and some serious soul searching,” Smith said she would not finish her current, four-year term. Smith said the office had taken a toll on her health, and retirement seemed the best option. In 2010, City Treasurer Jon Lumbra appointed Smith assistant treasurer, which she held for five years. “We immediately got to work addressing the major past audit issues that were present in the office and successfully worked together to create a solid team that made the office more efficient and fiscally responsible,” Smith stated.
