The Mathews County Board of Supervisors will hold a special meeting Tuesday to consider adoption of the county’s FY 2021-2022 budget.
The meeting will be held at 6 p.m. in the Harry M. Ward Auditorium at Mathews High School.
According to the Code of Virginia, approval of an annual budget for school purposes must be prepared by May 15 or “within 30 days of the receipt by the county or municipality of the estimates of state funds, whichever shall later occur.”
Mathews School Superintendent Nancy Welch said the school division is using the Direct Aid Payment Calculation Template dated Feb. 27, and that no major changes are expected.

Taylor Jacobs will be opening Little Shepherds Academy in August at Faith Baptist Church in Mathews.
Mathews native and former Mathews teacher Taylor Jacobs will be opening a day care center in August for infants, toddlers, and preschool-age children, with after-school care for children up to age 12 years. She is currently accepting applications for enrollment.
Little Shepherds Academy will be located at Faith Baptist Church on Route 14 in Mathews, said Jacobs, but it is a private business, not a church ministry. It will be open throughout the school year, offering curriculum-based learning in classes for pre-K 3 and pre-K 4 for an additional fee. The hours will be 7 a.m. to 6 p.m. Monday through Friday.

The Mathews County School Board honored some of its best classroom professionals this year, presenting Teacher of the Year gift baskets to Patrick Billups (Elementary School in Mathews), Jason Williams (Thomas Hunter Middle School) and Randy Applegate (Mathews High School). The three received gift baskets filled with gifts from a number of community businesses and individuals. The Mathews County School Board is expected to vote next month on a new name for the county’s elementary school.Board chairman John Priest indicated that the matter will be taken up at the May 18 meeting in response to a question posed by Mary Sampson of Foster during the public comment period at the start of Tuesday’s monthly meeting, which was held in the Harry M. Ward Auditorium at Mathews High School.

Frank Crittenden founded Chimney Corner on April 1, 1961 and is celebrating the 60th anniversary of the business.
Frank Crittenden and the staff at Chimney Corner Lawnmower, Inc., are in the midst of celebrating 60 years of business.Crittenden founded the business on April 1, 1961 and for a time he was its only employee. Now, Chimney Corner has 15 employees and services five counties and the Hampton Roads area.
Crittenden said that when he opened Chimney Corner, he was also the shop teacher at Mathews High School. He worked both jobs until 1980, when he decided to commit all his time to his growing business.
