Utah’s ranking nationwide in education funding has long been a sensitive subject for teachers, parents, and lawmakers.
For as long as most Utahns can remember, the state ranked 51st in its funding of schools. That is at bottom of the list for education funding, right below Idaho. However, there has been some relatively good news for Utah students. Recent statistics suggest that, for the first time in decades, Utah is no longer bringing up the rear. The Beehive State moved up one slot to bump Idaho down to no. 51.

Utah beat out Idaho in per-student for fiscal year 2019, finally lifting itself out of last place.
Utah is
no longer last in the country in per-student funding, according to the latest census data on public education funding. The state spent $8,014 per student for fiscal year 2019, barely nudging past its long-running rival Idaho. The national average was $13,197.
Since the data lags two years behind, it does not account for the significant increase in education funding lawmakers passed earlier this year. That could have a further positive impact on the state’s ranking, said Matthew Weinstein, fiscal policy director of the advocacy group Voices for Utah Children. But it’s also not likely to push the state’s trajectory out of the bottom ten nationally.
Looking to be closer to the government and defense fields, Boston-based Northeastern University is eyeing some space in Rosslyn.
The university is looking to convert the 14th floor of Arlington Tower (1300 17th Street N.) into a teaching space for graduate-level classes and a research space that will house The Kostas Research Institute for Homeland Security.
Matthew Weinstein, a land use attorney with McGuireWoods who represents Northeastern University, said in a letter that the university “seeks to establish an operation at the property as a central location for mission-driven programs including defense-based programs, benefitting from close proximity to government customers.”
Arlington County’s Department of Community Planning, Housing and Development has determined the research use still classifies as office use, according to a letter included in a staff report.
