Matthew Pearson, from Washington state, sent a letter to Iowa State Patrol offices which the organization posted on Facebook Monday. We don’t do this often, but your kind words and drawing really touched our hearts, the State Patrol wrote in its Facebook post.  The letter included a picture of Smith, who was shot and killed in Grundy Center in April. Smith, a 27-year veteran of the Patrol, died from a gunshot wound after he and other law officers went into a home to arrest Michael Thomas Lang, who was inside.
