As in, right now, April 2021, one year into a pandemic.
Like many of you, until the other day, until I started writing what youâre now reading, I hadnât stepped foot in a movie theater in more than a year. The last thing I saw in a theater was . I actually donât remember. Iâm sitting here, trying to recall, trying to recall, and. nope, nothing. It feels much too long ago to remember. The last âStar Warsâ? Maybe Greta Gerwigâs âLittle Womenâ? Perhaps â1917â? Whatever it was, Iâm guessing it was from 2019, and most likely an Oscar movie. I know I didnât see a single film last year inside of a theater or screening room, and like roughly 70% of Americans, according to polls, itâll be another six months before Iâm comfortable going routinely.

Matthew Avila, who was a first-year in the School of General Studies, passed away last month, Dean Lisa Rosen-Metsch wrote in an email to the General Studies community Thursday.
Before enrolling in General Studies, Avila graduated with honors with a degree in human development from Cornell University. Between graduating from Cornell in 2018 and beginning the Postbac Premed Program at the school of General Studies last fall, Avila was a research associate at Columbia Mailman School of Public Health as well as a clinical research coordinator at Columbia University Irving Medical Center. Avila, who Rosen-Metsch described as a “determined
