Buy option was key to Dike deal, insists Reds chief executive

× BARNSLEY have an option to buy American loanee Daryl Dike in the summer – but chief executive Dane Murphy has laughed off reports that it would take an eight-figure fee to bring him to Oakwell on a longer basis.  The 20-year-old striker from Oklahoma joined the Reds on loan from Major League Soccer club Orlando City until the end of the season ahead of Monday’s deadline. While Orlando insisted it is a short-term deal and that they have a recall clause on Dike, who is fresh from making his debut for the US international team, Barnsley announced they had an option to buy the former University of Virginia college soccer player – with some reports claiming it is $20million (£14.7million).

COMMENT: Can Barnsley crack the window?

BEEFING STRIKEFORCE UP, ADDING WING-BACK DEPTH Barnsley’s squad, assuming they do not sell key players or suffer any major injuries, is deep enough and good enough to compete for a place in the top half of the Championship. They have shown that already this season.  But, if they do manage to bring in another player or players in the final few days of the window, that might just give them a crucial extra edge in the second half of the season.  The Reds were impressively swift in the first week of the window, bringing in the striker and centre-back they had targeted in the form of Carlton Morris and Liam Kitching.

Talking points from Cardiff draw

× Doug O Kane analyses Barnsley s 2-2 draw with Cardiff City in which the Reds lost a 2-0 lead.    ‘SORRY’ REFEREE MADE VITAL ERRORS, BUT REDS ALSO AT FAULT Referee Andy Woolmer took charge of Barnsley’s 2016 Johnstone’s Paint Trophy victory at Wembley, which almost 30,000 Reds attended.  Nearly five years on, in a behind-closed-doors game, he infuriated the Oakwell club’s supporters watching from home as well as the players and staff in the ground with a poor performance.  Woolmer ruled out a perfectly good Reds goal in the seventh minute, judging that Cauley Woodrow had fouled Alex Smithies when actually the Barnsley striker had been pushed into the goalkeeper by Cardiff defender Aden Flint.
