Reds want wing-back and striker but deals very very difficult

× Barnsley are trying to recruit a striker and, possibly, a wing-back but Valerien Ismael admits it is ‘very, very difficult’ to get deals done in the final days of the ‘ugly’ January transfer window.   The deadline for transfers is 11pm on Monday, and the head coach says the Reds face a ‘fight’ until then, while he is confident of keeping hold of stars players such as captain Alex Mowatt.   Barnsley’s wing-backs Callum Brittain and Callum Styles have been two of their best players this season but Styles is naturally a midfielder while the back-ups are Clarke Oduor, also a natural midfielder who has barely featured for Ismael, and Jordan Williams who has been injured.

COMMENT: Can Barnsley crack the window?

BEEFING STRIKEFORCE UP, ADDING WING-BACK DEPTH Barnsley’s squad, assuming they do not sell key players or suffer any major injuries, is deep enough and good enough to compete for a place in the top half of the Championship. They have shown that already this season.  But, if they do manage to bring in another player or players in the final few days of the window, that might just give them a crucial extra edge in the second half of the season.  The Reds were impressively swift in the first week of the window, bringing in the striker and centre-back they had targeted in the form of Carlton Morris and Liam Kitching.

Bahre contract cancelled

Former Barnsley captain Mike Bahre s contract has been cancelled by mutual consent. The 25-year-old German midfielder has recovered from groin surgery and reached an agreement with the Reds to leave Oakwell. Bahre joined from Hannover 96 in 2018 to re-unite with his former coach Daniel Stendel and helped Barnsley to promotion from League One. He was made captain at the start of last season but soon lost the armband to Alex Mowatt then new head coach Gerhard Struber did not play him regularly and told him he could leave the club last summer. Struber has since been replaced by Valerien Ismael, who confirmed to the Chronicle earlier in the week that Bahre was looking to leave the club.
