Join mediaBrew Communications in Celebrating Independence Day

Join mediaBrew Communications in Celebrating Independence Day Marquette, MI – July 4, 2021 – We finally got to celebrate the Fourth of July with the community this year!  The Marquette streets were packed with people ready to watch the parade.  As the parade floats wound their way through the busy streets, candy, koozies, necklaces, and other knick-knacks were tossed into the crowds. There were police cars, fire trucks, and even a Coast Guard boat!  The Northern Michigan University President Fritz Erickson was also waving into the crowds. There were many great-looking floats including fun floats from The Man Cave, The Marquette Elks, and Edge of Reality.   The 2021 Miss Upper Peninsula was there too!  We couldn’t be happier about the Independence Day festivities being back in place.  If you missed Ishpeming’s celebrations, check out our post on yesterday’s parade here.

Area projects to receive trust fund grants | News, Sports, Jobs

cbleck@miningjournal.net MARQUETTE Three area projects will receive development grants after Gov. Gretchen Whitmer on Thursday signed HB 4469, which appropriates $37.8 million in Michigan Natural Resources Trust Fund grants to support 76 recreation projects and land purchases throughout Michigan. The Michigan Natural Resources Trust Fund Board recommended the grants in December. “The Michigan Natural Resources Trust Fund supports quality outdoor recreation, giving Michiganders the ability to safely enjoy the outdoors and boosting local economies,” Whitmer said in a statement. “This funding is crucial to helping communities utilize their natural resources and make Michigan’s public spaces more accessible and attractive to residents and visitors. I am proud to sign this piece of bipartisan legislation into law and support Michigan’s recreational resources and economy.”

Earth Week coming up | News, Sports, Jobs - The Mining Journal

cbleck@miningjournal.net Anderton’s Earth Week 2021 is coming up, with many environmental activities planned. They include Zoom presentations, clean-up events and others. (Photo courtesy of Northern Michigan University) MARQUETTE People can celebrate the environment through the upcoming Anderton’s Earth Week 2021. The event is named after the late John Anderton, a former head of the Northern Michigan University Department of Earth, Environmental and Geological Sciences. He passed away in March 2014. One of the many organizers of the multitude of events to be held in-person, outdoors and virtually is John O’Bryan, who is finishing what he called an “individually created degree” in climate advocacy at NMU. O’Bryan has been an intern with the NMU Sustainability Advisory Council, but his involvement with Earth Week is part of an independent capstone course of climate advocacy with Professor Josh Ewalt in the communications department.

rspitza@miningjournal.net From left, U.P. 200 trail boss Mike Sjolund, Upper Peninsula Sled Dog Association Board members Angela Sjolund and Ross Anthony, and trail crew member Trevor Slinkard are shown with the UP200 starting gate that UPSDA officials set up at the Marquette Commons Thursday. The group did so to honor and recognize what would’ve been the 32nd running of the UP200, Midnight Run and Jack Pine 30 races this weekend, as they were canceled due to COVID-19. The 32nd running of the event has been postponed to 2022. The gate will be up through the weekend. (Journal photo by Ryan Spitza)
