Council says it s not the right time for retail marijuana in Bar Harbor

BAR HARBOR  Unless someone forces a citizens’ initiative to allow marijuana businesses, it is unlikely that Bar Harbor will be participating in the retail marijuana trade.   During a special town marijuana workshop on Tuesday, Town Council members expressed a variety of reasons as to why it was not the right time to allow marijuana-related establishments in Bar Harbor.   Council members were aided in their discussion by Stephen Wagner, a member of Rudman Winchell’s municipal law practice group, who explained the opt–in process and took questions from council members, some of which will be answered at a later date.

Council to seek public input on cruise ships BAR HARBOR On Tuesday, Town Council members moved to hire an outside company to create a survey to find out more about the public’s specific concerns surrounding cruise ship visitation. “Try this, to hire an experienced professional to design, produce, compile and analyze the responses of a community survey of opinions on cruise ship visitation and to pay for this from the cruise ship fund,” proposed council member Gary Friedmann. The motion passed unanimously. In response to concerned citizens who would like to see some changes regarding cruise ships, council members have discussed creating a cruise ship policy to regulate the number of ships for the future.

Town takes first steps to build fiber network  - Mount Desert Islander

Town takes first steps to build fiber network  BAR HARBOR Due to an anticipated franchise agreement change with the town’s current internet provider, the Bar Harbor’s Communication and Technologies Committee (CTC) has suggested the town fund the construction and installation of its own fiber network at a cost of $750,000.   CTC Chairman George Grohs provided a memo with details from the project’s consultant, Casco Bay Advisors, at a recent town council meeting. He said the internet is necessary for the day-to-day function of town staff and services and that it currently depends on a fiber network owned by Charter Communications. “Due to a recent change in federal legislature, Charter will be able to withhold franchise fee resulting in a $45,000 annual cost to the town for continued use of the fiber and refuses to negotiate the expired franchise agreement,” said Grohs.

Classic Dickens tale gets radio adaptation, Downeast style

Classic Dickens tale gets radio adaptation, Downeast style  MOUNT DESERT ISLAND Cast members of the radio show version of “A Downeast Christmas Carol” were preparing to record scenes for the audio-only production last week without a set date to air the performance.  “We don’t have a premiere date,” said co-producer Matt Cornish. “We want to get the recordings in the can. At the very least, we’ll be able to share it via YouTube as an audio show.”  Official radio airtime or not, the adapted version of Charles Dickens’s “A Christmas Carol” will go on as one of the few performances by Acadia Community Theater in 2020. Theaters and acting companies throughout the region and around the world have been adversely affected by the pandemic and have had to think of new, creative ways to bring their craft to the public.
