FAIRMONT â Residents listening in on the police scanner this week may have believed there was a mass tragedy taking place, but in reality, it was the sound of Fairmont State University holding active shooter training.
âBasically what we weâre doing was within our department,â said Matt Swain, chief of police at Fairmont State University. âSummertime is a better opportunity for our officers to train when thereâs not as many people on campus.â

FAIRMONT â The Fairmont State University campus has been closed to the community for over a year. Now theyâre slowly opening things again.
University officials said as of May 5, community members are allowed to enter campus for limited activities.
âWeâre trying to do a phased approach to reopening to community,â said Matt Swain, chief of police for Fairmont State.
Wednesday, community members could drop in the Falcon Center and take advantage of the food or conference room services. The university is also resuming its in-person campus tours to prospective students.
