Local government leaders say when it comes to staff vaccinations, it s don t ask, don t tell. Cathy Oloffson is director of Communications and Community Relations for the Town of Normal. She said town staff is generally forthcoming about getting their COVID vaccines, so coworkers can plan accordingly. “Many coworkers have been very honest about it. ‘I am going to be out. I am getting the vaccine or I might be here, depending on how I respond to the vaccine,’” Oloffson said. “Many people have shared it voluntarily.”

Normal Firefighters Regroup After Hectic Weekend

Normal Fire Department / Facebook It was a long weekend for the Normal Fire Department. It started early Saturday morning, when a freight train derailed in Uptown. That afternoon, a fire destroyed a dozen units at Sugar Creek Apartments. Then came two more fires from trailers overturned by the derailment. All of that on top of routine calls for service. No one was hurt during the weekend s catastrophes. But NFD Public Information Officer Matt Swaney said first responders sure are tired. “We usually at least have some down time between our workdays and the firefighters can go home and recuperate,” Swaney said. “But in this case, we were calling back shifts quite frequently over the weekend. So, we wouldn t have been able to do it without our mutual aid agencies to help us.”

Sugar Creek Apartment Fire Caused By Repair Work

Charlie Schlenker / WGLT The Normal Fire Department said Tuesday the blaze that heavily damaged or destroyed 12 units at the Sugar Creek Apartments on Saturday was caused by repair work being done inside a lower-level apartment. The fire caused the roof to collapse and caused substantial damage throughout the building. Crews spent much of Saturday afternoon battling the blaze, after spending much of the morning cleaning up a nearby train derailment. Normal Fire Chief Mick Humer said in a news release the apartment fire spread inside the walls and void spaces and extended into the attic before the fire department arrived.
