Coastal News Today | NC - Contractor completes Emerald Isle nourishment project, last of post-Florence beach work

EMERALD ISLE After almost exactly three months, the 9.4-mile-long Emerald Isle beach nourishment projected ended early Monday morning, with the exception of planting vegetation on new dunes, which is set to commence next week. The Liberty Island, one of two Great Lakes Dredge and Dock Co. vessels working on the project, delivered its last load of sand via pipeline to the strand in the eastern end of town at about 6 a.m. Monday. The other vessel on the project, the Ellis Island, finished its work Sunday night, transporting a load of sand from the borrow site in the ocean off Atlantic Beach.

Zapp talks proposed changes to beach driving, paid parking in Emerald Isle

EMERALD ISLE — The beach access parking plan under study by Emerald Isle commissioners would set an hourly parking rate in lieu of the current fee of $10 per day at the eastern and western ocean regional access facilities. In an email Tuesday, Town Manager Matt Zapp said officials believe it would “provide a cost savings to most users,” and staff is researching “tech-based solutions to administer parking fees,” such as phone apps to provide easy access. The change in the parking plan is listed as a town goal for 2021, the result of a commission discussion during a special meeting Dec. 8. Among the other goals listed is a reduction in the time period during which beach driving is allowed.

Emerald Isle golf cart safety class goes virtual

EMERALD ISLE — There are approximately 1,250 golf carts registered for use on Emerald Isle streets, and all of those registrations expire Saturday. The registration fee is $100, and residents can get $25 off that price by taking a golf cart safety, rules and regulations class. It’s a discount many users have taken advantage of in years past. With the novel coronavirus still raging through the area and showing no signs of letting up anytime soon, the town has moved that class online. It started slowly, Town Manager Matt Zapp said, since the town began accepting applications for new permits and renewals Dec. 1.
