Whitney Maddox was waiting for an Uber in east Knoxville, Tennessee, one early Friday morning in January when he spotted a black sedan idling outside a Planned Parenthood clinic.
Assuming the car was for him, Maddox hurried over and peered inside. Then he bolted away. What he saw in the vehicle, he later told police, was a white man with a white bandana over his face. The man was holding a shotgun and pointing it at the clinic doors.

At 85, the most influential Republican political donor in modern U.S. history says he has some regrets. According to soft-ball corporate media interviews and a new book he s written, billionaire industrialist Charles Koch wishes that his more than five decades of organizing and funding far-right, partisan politicians, advocacy groups, and academia had slightly less partisan results.
Koch s latest media makeover strains credulity. The man spent his entire adult life, while helming one of the largest and dirtiest private companies in the nation, working to fundamentally alter society and move it towards his ideal: a libertarian utopia with low taxes, no unions, weak regulations, and unlimited corporate political spending.
In December 2009, after a political rally, Spokane Sheriff Ozzie Knezovich was chatting with fellow Republicans, when a woman walked up and joined the conversation. She kept asking the sheriff if he was ready for Christmas.
âWell yeah, I think we got that taken care of,â the sheriff responded. But the woman continued to press the point â was he ready for Christmas?
âAnd I said, Ma am, why donât you fill me in. What are you actually talking about?ââ

It’s baaaack.
Like Arnold Schwarzenegger in a “Terminator” movie, the proposal to split Washington at the Cascade Crest and create a new state out of the eastern half has returned to the Legislature.
This despite the fact that its prime sponsor in recent years, Rep. Matt Shea, is now former Rep. Matt Shea. The issue has been picked up by Shea’s sort-of successor, freshman Rep. Rob Chase.
(We qualify the description because Chase technically was elected to the other House seat in the Spokane Valley’s 4th District when he and incumbent Rep. Bob McCaslin did a switcheroo on the final day of filing. But Chase, a Libertarian turned Republican and county treasurer turned legislator, is the newbie resulting from Shea’s decision not to run.)
