Reviews of this year s Juno-nominated comedy albums, including two by Vancouver comedians | Georgia Straight Vancouver s News & Entertainment Weekly

Apart from that, there’s not a weak album on the list. And the comics hail from across the country, so there’s that. Horse Power Vancouver-based comic  Jacob Samuel is technically one of the best stand-ups of the bunch. He’s perfected his wise, snarky delivery, and his material feels uniquely his own. But in  Horse Power (800 Pound Gorilla Records), something about his act seems too exact, almost chilly; there’s no warmth, nothing to endear him to us. That’s not to say he isn’t clever. The way he deconstructs the cliché dating advice “there are lots of fish in the sea” to comment on the environment is sharp. And you get a good sense of his personality by the way he analyzes the word “efficient”.

Reviews of this year s Juno-nominated comedy albums

Where’s Brandon Ash-Mohammed’s Capricornication or Nick Reynoldson’s I’ll Be Fine (both reviewed here), or Rebecca Kohler’s Guilty And Disgusting, or Michelle Shaunessy’s Botoxic?

Krieg Impenetrable as Tar Heels Hold Off Virginia in Thursday Night ACC Melee

Photo courtesy of Matt Riley/UVA Media Relations) North Carolina remains perfect in the Chris Gray and Will Bowen era, but freshman goalie Collin Krieg stole the show on Thursday night in the Tar Heels’ 16-13 victory at No. 8 Virginia. It was a cathartic night of college lacrosse action a year removed from the moment when everything was ripped away in a perfect atmosphere at Klockner Stadium with limited but boisterous on the broadcast fans in attendance. “I talked to [Virginia coach] Lars [Tiffany] before the game and was like, you know it’s a sigh of relief that we’re back at it after one year ago when things started to go haywire,” North Carolina coach Joe Breschi said. “We’re so happy for the student-athletes, continuing to remind them that it’s special to be out there because you never know when it can be taken away. Tonight was another reminder.”
