New state, national unemployment claims fall as pandemic restrictions are lifted

The number of Americans seeking unemployment aid fell to a pandemic low last week while Missouri claims also dropped.
Initial weekly unemployment claims nationwide hit a peak of 900,000 in January. Claims were at 498,000 in the most recent reporting week.
In Missouri, unemployment claims dropped by about 4,000 last week. At the end of April, claims were sitting at 12,424, but as of last week claims were at 8,267.
Joe Haslag, an economics professor at the University of Missouri, said the easing of local coronavirus-related restrictions in Missouri is helping spark more hiring.

SHELTON Competition is already heating up for Board of Aldermen seats on the November ballot.
Envision Shelton, which began as a bipartisan political action committee last September, filed paperwork Tuesday to become a slate committee.
The group then immediately put forth candidates for each ward, challenging the fully Republican eight-person Board of Aldermen.

SHELTON Envision Shelton is teaming with BHCare to collect necessities for homeless residents in and around the city.
The collection runs through Sunday. Items can be dropped off at Moderno’s Barbershop, 194 Leavenworth Road, or Splash Car Wash, 376 Bridgeport Ave.
Items needed include socks; sunscreen lotion; hats with brims; diapers, wipes and baby formula; toiletries and personal care items such as shampoo and conditioner, soap, body wash, deodorant, feminine hygiene products, lotions, shaving cream and razors, toothbrushes, toothpaste, combs and hairbrushes; hand sanitizer and detergent; backpacks, reusable tote bags and canvas tote bags; thermal blankets; sleeping bags; and

California-based cactus water brand Caliwater is set to relaunch this month with a new founding team that includes actor/filmmaker Oliver Trevena and actress Vanessa Hudgens.
