Motorists will see high gas prices for the Memorial Day weekend

CANTON – Ohioans are planning to hit the road in droves this Memorial Day weekend after the pandemic led many to stay home last year, according to a new analysis by AAA. However, those drivers can expect to pay for their newfound freedom at the pump with gas prices across the state, especially in Eastern Ohio, at their highest levels since 2014, AAA says. The travel club estimates that 1.7 million Ohioans will travel farther than 50 miles, 95% of them by car. That translates to a 57% rise in Memorial Day travel from last year’s record low. As more people get the COVID-19 vaccine and consumer confidence grows, Americans are demonstrating a strong desire to travel this Memorial Day,  Paula Twidale, senior vice president of AAA Travel, said in a prepared statement.

Ohio seeing more speeding crashes despite fewer cars on the road

Cuyahoga County leads the state in speed-related crashes. Author: Romney Smith Updated: 6:11 PM EDT May 18, 2021 CLEVELAND It’s no surprise that some Ohio drivers speed. What is surprising is that speed-related accidents maintained similar numbers during the pandemic when fewer people were driving.  According to the Ohio State Highway Patrol, in 2019 there were 30,354 speed-related crashes. In 2020, there were 30,120. Sgt. Ray Santiago, Public Affairs Officer with Ohio State Highway Patrol, says the department has been tracking and analyzing the numbers. “During COVID times, the vehicular traffic that was on the roadways did seem to be moving a little faster than normal,” says Sgt. Santiago.
