WHAT S NEXT
The Devils hit the road for a four-game road trip, starting with three straight in Pittsburgh. Game 1 is Tuesday night. You can watch on MSG+ 2 and listen on the Devils Hockey Network, including right here at NewJerseyDevils.com. Game time is 7:08 PM ET.
New York won the season finale against the two clubs and the season series, 6-2.
The Rangers staked out their 3-0 edge on goals from Chris Kreider, Vitali Kravtsov and Alex Lafreniere. But the Devils would not go quietly into that good night (or afternoon in this case).
The Devils rally started with a late second-period goal (65 seconds left in the period) from Mikhail Maltsev and carried over with two more scores in the third from Marian Studenic, his first-career NHL goal, and captain Nico Hischier, his first goal since Feb. 27.
First Period
The Wood-McLeod-Bastian line started the game against the Rangers’ Panarin-Strome-Blackwell line. The Devils won the draw, and they got quickly on a dump and forecheck. Miles Wood did take the puck away, but the Ranger pushed it out of the zone. The Devils and Rangers then went back and forth, with the Devils blocking away a centering pass from Panarin to Strome.
The Hughes line acme on, and Jack Hughes got the first shot on goal of the game. He collected the puck at the edge of the faceoff circle, turned, and shot into Alexandar Georgiev’s chest.

Before getting into this game, I want to prepare all of you for what’s ahead. Our lineup for this game consists of:
No Zacha, no Bratt, no Butcher, no Thompson, no Blackwood, not even Wedgewood. Instead we have Aaron Dell, and Matt Tennyson.
Apparently all my prayers for Nico’s return should have been more specific about ‘and also can we still have everyone else please’.
Alas, here we go:
First Period
Within the first 30 seconds Dell makes an easy save on Ryan Strome look like a dramatic, difficult play because he drops the puck nearly on the goal line after barely making the save. At least he made the save, so it’s slightly better than the start of our last game, but that does not bode well for the remainder of this game.
