Published: 12 May 2021 ~High demand expected from homes and offices~ PHILIPSBURG: -  TelEm Group says residential and business properties in the Cole Bay area will soon be connecting to the company’s fiber-optic network, now that fiber cables are being laid throughout the district.  TelEm Fiber workmen and sub-contractors are now busy in the Cole Bay area carrying out a series of civil works in preparation for the running of cables, followed soon after by connections to homes and businesses. Cole Bay will be largest area so far to be connected to the company’s fiber network now that the areas of Simpson Bay, Point Blanche, Sucker Garden, Oyster Pond, Valley Estate Weymouth Hill, St. Peters, Betty’s Estate, parts of Madame Estate, have been passed as being “fiber ready”.

Published: 07 April 2021 PHILIPSBURG: - The Detective Department is busy investigating a shooting that took place in Madame Estate leaving an armed robber dead and another seriously injured. According to information provided to SMN News, some armed men robbed the Pavilion Jewelers located next to Horizon View Hotel on Front Street, police gave chase that ended in Madame Estate where the shots were fired leaving one dead. Police Spokesman Joe Josepha said that the suspects were armed and dangerous and they responded to police with gunfire. Josepha said police returned fire hitting two men, one he said died on the spot while the other was transported to the St. Maarten Medical Center.

Published: 29 January 2021 PHILIPSBURG: - NV GEBE, in its continued commitment to address the basic needs in the areas of water, is ensuring that the community of St. Maarten will have access to the supply of water to meet their daily needs such as cooking, drinking, bathing, and washing. Prior to Hurricane Irma in 2017, NV GEBE had 15 water tanks with a storage capacity of 3 days which met the demand of the community. Traditionally, it has always been common practice to keep water tanks in a full or near full condition to meet peak water use periods and for emergencies such as storms, however, all that changed in 2017, when Hurricane Irma damaged 9 of NV GEBE’s 15 Water Tanks leaving the water infrastructure in a crippled position. The water storage for the island was then reduced to less than half a day of storage due to the magnitude of the devastation.
