UPDATE: No gas leak found at Walnut Elementary; relocation process goes smoothly

Walnut Elementary students gathered at Messiah Lutheran Church while a potential gas leak was investigated. Students have returned to school as the investigation continues. Chuck Samples/KVOE News Emporia Public Schools moved students at Walnut Elementary offsite for close to two hours Friday morning after concerns about a possible gas leak. District Community Relations Director Lyndel Landgren told KVOE News about the situation shortly before 7:30 am. Landgren says food service personnel and other staff noticed a smell of natural gas when they came in, so the district sent students to Messiah Lutheran Church until the situation was resolved. Ultimately, no gas leak was found.

Three Alton precincts vote in the church. Alton joined several other local municipalities who had mayoral races on the ballot Tuesday. EDWARDSVILLE Light turnout was reported for Tuesday’s consolidated elections. Election officials this week, including Madison County Clerk Debra Ming-Mendoza, projected the low number of voters usually seen in an off-year election. Several municipal, school board and special district elections were on the ballot, including leadership races for Alton, Godfrey and Wood River as well as Lewis and Clark Community College Board of Trustees seats.

Congregation partners with Schenectady County Health Department to get neighbors vaccinated FacebookTwitterEmail ROTTERDAM Messiah Lutheran Church’s Trinity Community Center is partnering with Schenectady County Health Department to administer 200 doses of the COVID-19 vaccine from 10:30 a.m. to 5:30 p.m. Wednesday, April 7. The vaccination site will be held at Messiah’s Trinity Community Center located at 705 Curry Road in Rotterdam. “I think that it is so important to get as many people vaccinated as quickly as possible, especially with the uptick of cases of the other variants of COVID-19,” said Suzanne Collins, vice president of Messiah, in a statement. “Also, we are providing a local place for those who may have problems with transportation, and bringing the vaccinations to our neighborhood.”
