HAILAKANDI: A voter awareness programme was organised by the Systematic Voters Education and Electoral Participation (SVEEP) Cell among the students of SS College here on Friday. As part of the awareness programme, the college authorities organised poster competition and essay competition on the theme democracy . Principal of the college, Dr. Amalendu Bhattacharjee welcomed the SVEEP Cell members from the district administration.

Hailakandi, Tridip Roy in his opening remarks underscored the importance on the role of youth in exercising their voting rights for strengthening the edifice of democracy. He also said that the district administration has formed the SVEEP Cell to motivate voters in the upcoming Assembly election.

Guwahati/Aizawl, Feb 13 : The Assam Assembly on Friday discussed the Assam-Mizoram border disputes even as tension prevailed in the villages along the borders of the two northeastern states following the violent incidents on Tuesday and Wednesday.
According to the southern Assam s Hailakandi district officials, the prohibitory orders under Section 144 of the Cr Pc have been continued on Friday along the bordering areas, in addition to the deployment of a large contingent of security forces in the area.
HAILAKANDI/AIZAWL: In a rerun of last year s incidents of violence on Assam-Mizoram border, several shacks were torched and a number of people were injured in clashes allegedly between residents of the two states in a disputed area, officials said on Wednesday.
The incidents of violence and arson took place at Kachurthol under Ramnathpur police station area of Assam on Tuesday, prompting the authorities to clamp prohibitory orders under Section 144 CrPC in Hailakandi district, bordering Kolasib district of Mizoram, an Assam official said.
The disputed Kachurthol is near Bairabi in Kolasib district.
Officials of both Hailakandi and Kolasib said the security has been beefed up the area where the situation is now under control.
