Franklin girls easily outpace Woodmen
12/18/20 11:11 PM
Few things invite the potential for complacency more than a 50-point victory earlier in the season.
That was the dilemma facing the Franklin girls basketball team Friday night as it prepared to host Greenwood in a Mid-State Conference contest. The Grizzly Cubs, ranked eighth in Class 4A, moved to 9-0 with a 77-29 victory.
The same squads met in November on the same hardwood with the Cubs prevailing, 75-25.
Franklin junior guard Kuryn Brunson led all scorers with 24 points before checking out of the game for good with 6:34 remaining in the final quarter. Senior guard Kyra Baker added 15 points with freshman forward Erica Buening scoring 10 off the bench for the Cubs, who remain tied with Martinsville atop the league standings at 3-0.

Steve Ranney was among the 39 passengers on Flight 3296. He s a commercial pilot with 20 years experience and still trying to understand what went wrong that day. I just don t think that we can flat accept that there s going to be accidents like this, Ranney said. I think that s really one of the more important things. I know people make mistakes, but in the air carrier world these things should not happen. This shouldn t have happened at all.
Ranney is still recovering from his injuries. A passenger to his left fared much worse: 38-year-old David Oltman was fatally injured in the crash. There were at least nine people hurt. Oltman s death on Oct. 17, 2019 was the second fatality for a commercial airline in the U.S. in the last decade.
GREAT BEND TRIBUNE Wintry conditions lead to multiple crashes Tuesday night
The Barton County Sheriff’s Office reported wintery weather which caused slick, snow-packed conditions was a contributing factor to three crashes in rural Barton County Tuesday night.
At about 6:06 p.m., A 1997 Ford F-150 driven by 31-year-old Duke Turner of Hoisington collided with a 1996 Chevrolet Lumina driven by Brian Thompson, also of Hoisington, at the intersection of NW 10 Ave. and NW 30 Road north of Great Bend.
Deputies report that Thompson, traveling west on NW 30 Road, was unable to stop at the stop sign at the intersection, and struck the Ford F-150 which was traveling north on NW 10 Ave. The Ford went into the northwest ditch and struck the Lumina in the rear driver quarter panel. The Lumina came to rest facing east in the middle of NW 10 Ave. Megan Thompson, 29, a passenger in the Lumina, was treated for minor injuries and released at the scene by Great Bend Fire Department
