DECATUR â Colleagues and friends paid tribute to fallen Champaign Police Officer Chris Oberheim as a brave and devoted man who died as he lived, protecting and serving the community he cherished.
Oberheim, 44, who began his law enforcement career as a Decatur Police Officer and whose younger brother Joe Oberheim still serves with the department, died in an exchange of gunfire while answering a domestic violence call at an apartment complex on Champaign s north side early Wednesday, authorities said.Â
DECATUR â Police said a drunken Decatur woman, who believed her boyfriend was cheating on her and refused to leave his home after pushing him and ripping his clothes, was taken away in handcuffs early Saturday.
A sworn affidavit from the Macon County Sheriffâs Office quotes the 39-year-old woman as asking arresting deputies: âAll I did was push him. Since when is that battery?â
Her answer came when she was hauled off to jail and booked on a preliminary charge of committing domestic battery involving physical contact.
The affidavit, signed by Deputy Justin Libby, said the 31-year-old boyfriend had called police to his home in the 2800 block of South Wyckles Road at 4:33 a.m. Dispatchers could hear a female voice crying and a male voice stating, âShe wonât leaveâ.

DECATUR â Even as the 2018 Macon County sheriffâs election between incumbent Tony Brown and challenger Jim Root remains unsettled, the focus may soon turn to 2022 as another familiar name is eyeing the office. The answer is yes, he will be running for sheriff in 2022, said former Sheriff Thomas Schneider, who is listed as chairman of the âCommittee to Elect Buffett for Sheriffâ on campaign finance documents filed with the Illinois State Board of Elections last October.
According to the documents, Buffett plans to run as a Republican, which could set up a head-to-head primary matchup with Root and, if successful, a general election contest against incumbent Brown, a Democrat who defeated Root by a single vote in the still-unresolved 2018 election.

SPRINGFIELD, Ill. â Illinois officially placed the James R. Thompson Center that houses state government offices in downtown Chicago up for sale, state officials said Monday.
Gov. J.B. Pritzker and the Illinois Department of Central Management Services took a step that has been in the works for years. Illinois officials have argued the 17-story building designed by celebrated architect Helmut Jahn is a drain on state finances because it s inefficient to operate and in need of hundreds of millions of dollars in repairs. Selling the property provides a unique opportunity to maximize taxpayer savings, create thousands of union jobs, generate millions of dollars in real estate taxes to benefit the City of Chicago and spur economic development, Pritzker said in a news release.
