On Nov. 3, 3,068,542 Indiana residents cast their ballots in the 2020 presidential election. Regrettably, on Nov. 3, 26,000 Indiana residents were not allowed to vote for their next president. These 26,000 voters represented individuals incarcerated in one of Indianaâs 18 prisons. Numerous studies have also shown that Black and brown citizens are more likely to be convicted of a felony charge than their white counterparts.
By denying this right to a legal citizen, the entire voting process is tainted by discrimination and inequity. Felony charges run from murder to a mere larceny charge of $1,200. Imprisoned felons are already paying their debt to society by living under very dismal and restrictive conditions.
