New textbook illuminates African American scholars’ centuries-long crusade for true democracy

PROVIDENCE, R.I. [Brown University] Readers who browse the politics section of a bookstore will find countless anthologies of essays and speeches by American political thinkers. But most have one thing in common: They focus chiefly on white, wealthy and powerful intellectuals and barely skim the surface of African American political thought.
Melvin Rogers, an associate professor of political science at Brown University, has long wished he could change that fact. Political scientist Jack Turner co-edits volume on African American political theory
Jack Turner, UW associate professor of political science, has teamed with Melvin Rogers of Brown University to edit “African American Political Thought: A Collected History.” The book is being published this month by University of Chicago Press.
The volume of essays features scholars’ reflections on prominent Black intellectuals of the past four centuries including W.E.B. Du Bois, James Baldwin, Ida B. Wells, Toni Morrison, Malcolm X, Audre Lorde, Cornel West and others. Turner and UW political science professor Michael McCann both contributed chapters, and Turner penned the introduction with
Last year, Ben reported a 113% increase in the amount of people visiting mental health pages on its website and a 52% increase in demand for the charity’s services, all whilst battling the shortfall.
Sytner said it had supported Ben for nearly 27 years, championing the charity and its work to a 9,000-strong workforce and since establishing the relationship, Sytner colleagues, dealerships and divisions have contributed to the not-for-profit charity, but say the recent donation is the largest single contribution to date.
