OPINION: FOR WELFARE'S SAKE, LESS IS MORE - MICK KENT

OPINION: FOR WELFARE’S SAKE, LESS IS MORE – MICK KENT July 21, 2021 6:46 am By Mick Kent We have a real problem. We are breeding 12,500 horses a year to fuel a racing industry that requires nowhere near that many. What happens to the ones who don’t make it? We have weakened the breed, leading to greater wastage. It is a myth that many can transition into equestrian, which is mostly populated by purpose-bred warmbloods from Europe. The warmbloods are better movers and clean-legged. They’re more powerful, shorter coupled and jump bigger. One of the only avenues for ex-racehorses is in eventing.

BETTING ON JUMPS RACING. IT'S A REAL THING NOW

RSN927 BETTING ON JUMPS RACING. IT’S A REAL THING NOW July 19, 2021 3:50 pm By Matt Stewart, Racing Editor A mate texted me this morning, alerting me to some figures that are more significant than they first seem. They raced at both Sportsbet Pakenham and Warracknabeal was a flat-race program and Pakenham was exclusively jumps. The anti-jumps people have had a few key gripes including animal welfare, cost to put it on – believed to be around $4 million a year – and that “no-one bets on it.” Well, they did yesterday. Admittedly Pakenham was a showcase of the very best jumping horses and Warracknabeal was a maiden and Benchmark 58 program relocated from washed-out
