Van Morrison and John Cooper Clarke on life and (anti) lockdown

Photographs by Gavin Bond It would be difficult to find two rock alumni with more distinctive voices. In the left corner we have Van Morrison, a man who still talks exactly as he sings. Even though he speaks with a rough mid-Atlantic Belfast brogue, when Morrison talks you immediately expect a full 100-person orchestra to spring up behind him, swathing his harsh vowels in mellifluous strings and deep, sombre tenor saxophones, transporting the pair of you to a windswept Donegal beach. In the right corner we have John Cooper Clarke, the cadaverous punk poet whose velvet voice of discontent (©Kate Moss) can whisk you away to a black-and-white terraced street in the wrong part of Hulme in 1977. They are the unmistakable voices of rock’n’roll, two kings of cool who never had any interest in being anything other than themselves.

WAYNE KRANTZ releases previously unheard MUSIC ROOM 1985 on March 19, 2021

Few musicians invest so much in the moment as guitarist Wayne Krantz, whose career has been defined by a fearless embrace of risk and a willingness to charge headlong into uncharted terrain testing himself and thrilling an ever-growing legion of dedicated, adventurous listeners. Whether experienced on record or in concert, Krantz’s singular style, immaculate technique, and improvisational daring combined with a subversive pop sensibility rarely evidenced in improvised music circles have established him amongst the foremost postmodern guitar renegades of our era. Today the guitar maverick shares the first cut “Cowboy. Stream “Cowboy” via YouTube here.

Keep it eclectic: MBE legend Tom Schnabel shares wisdom — and a Miles Davis story — with Anthony and Novena

MORE The legendary Tom Schnabel returns to MBE for a special guest birthday set with new hosts Novena Carmel and Anthony Valadez. Photo by KCRW Tom Schnabel is considered a legend on these mean streets of Los Angeles. He s a music consultant, a historian and educator, and a curator for multiple music releases and compilations. He s been part of KCRW since 1977, and he served as the station s Music Director from 1979 to 1990. Novena and I recently caught up with Schnabel just a few days before we started our tenure as Morning Becomes Eclectic hosts. ANTHONY VALADEZ: Tom, I want you to take us back in time. What was LA like when you joined MBE? What did LA smell like during this time?
