5G testing lab to cut reliance on handful of multinational firms is launched

June 24, 2021, 12:07 am The opening of Government-backed Sonic Labs is the latest step towards greater tech diversity following a ban on Huawei-made 5G kit (Steve Parsons/PA) A new high-tech 5G lab designed to make the UK less reliant on a small number of multinational suppliers has launched, as the Government attempts to fill the void left by Huawei. The Sonic Labs facility, based in London and Brighton, will aim to accelerate the development of 5G communication kit that is interoperable with components made by others to prevent over-reliance on one firm. It comes after the Government ordered operators in the UK to strip their networks of Huawei-made 5G equipment by 2027 over security concerns, following US sanctions restricting Huawei’s ability to build chips.

Rural broadband boosted as BT s Openreach doubles full-fibre target

Openreach s new rollout will ease pressure on the public purse 28 May 2021 • 6:00am BT s infrastructure builder has doubled the number of homes and businesses it will upgrade to full-fibre broadband in the countryside, The Telegraph can reveal. Openreach plans to ease the burden on the Government by shouldering the cost of delivering full-fibre to an extra 3m premises in some of the hardest-to-reach parts of the UK.  The move doubles the broadband builder s previous commitment from 3m to 6m, meaning more rural communities can expect a faster upgrade from older copper connections.  With Openreach funding more of the rural build, ministers can now target subsidies towards the most remote parts of the nation deemed too expensive for commercially funded upgrades.
