Openreach's new rollout will ease pressure on the public purse
28 May 2021 • 6:00am
BT's infrastructure builder has doubled the number of homes and businesses it will upgrade to full-fibre broadband in the countryside,
The Telegraph can reveal.
Openreach plans to ease the burden on the Government by shouldering the cost of delivering full-fibre to an extra 3m premises in some of the hardest-to-reach parts of the UK.
The move doubles the broadband builder's previous commitment from 3m to 6m, meaning more rural communities can expect a faster upgrade from older copper connections.
With Openreach funding more of the rural build, ministers can now target subsidies towards the most remote parts of the nation deemed too expensive for commercially funded upgrades.
