A 16-year-old boy has been sentenced to an 18-month youth rehabilitation order in connection to an attack on UCL student, Jonathan Mok.
The assault occurred last year in February on Oxford Street when one individual from a group of white males made a remark towards the 23-year-old Singaporean student about coronavirus. The individual then proceeded to punch and kick Jonathan whilst his friends joined in.
Witnesses heard individuals involved in the attack shout explicitly racist phrases such as “you are diseased, don’t come near me” and “I don’t want your coronavirus in our country.”
Although the convicted youth denied racism as the cause of violence, chair of the bench Mervyn Mandell stated: “This was an unprovoked attack for no reason other than his [Mr. Mok’s] appearance.”

The teen, who targeted Jonathan Mok for having the “coronavirus,” was found guilty of racially aggravated grievous bodily harm in a trial at Highbury Corner Youth Court earlier this month.

The incident, which left Mok with facial fractures, occurred around 9:15 p.m. in Oxford Street, London on Feb. 24, 2020.
“I saw one of them look at me (just as he walked past me) and said something to me, which I could make out the word ‘coronavirus,’” Mok wrote of the attack, which involved four male perpetrators.

Jonathan Mok was beaten up on Oxford Street last February by a group of boys in an unprovoked attack .
The chair of the bench gave the boy an 18-month youth rehabilitation order.
He was also ordered to wear an electronic tag, follow a curfew order between 20:00 and 07:00 for 10 weeks and must pay £600 compensation to Mr Mok.

A British court also ordered the teenager to follow a curfew from 8pm to 7am which will be electronically monitored and pay £600 (S$1,000) compensation to Mr Jonathan Mok, whose injuries from the attack had to be treated with facial surgery.

The 16-year-old, who cannot be named due to legal reasons, punched 24-year-old Jonathan Mok in the face during the group attack on February 24 last year.
Witnesses to the attack standing a few metres away heard the words disease and coronavirus used, while Mr Mok said the defendant told him: I don t want your coronavirus in my country.
UCL law student Mr Mok, who had been studying in London for two years at the time of the incident, required surgery on his face following the confrontation on Oxford Street, central London.
