Snow is set to drop on Massachusetts on Friday, although a warmup promised by the National Weather Service afterward may be a small consolation.
The service predicts that rain will turn to snow on Thursday night, and most of the state will see between 1 and 3 inches.
“Can’t rule out some 4-5 [inch] totals but cold air probably arrives a bit too late for those higher amounts,” the service said on Twitter. “Other story is strong NE winds. 40-50 mph gusts possible near coast.”
Portions of Cape Cod and Nantucket are expected to see the strongest wind gusts, with predictions between 45 and 50 miles per hour. In Boston, the wind is expected to hit between 30 and 35 miles per hour.

HOPKINS CO., Ky. (WFIE) - Madisonville crews were hard at work Thursday morning.
We spoke with Hopkins County EMA Director Nick Bailey before the second round of snow started coming down. He told us the city, county and state plow crews are on alert.
However, he’s warning drivers not to be in a hurry on the roads Thursday, especially in these conditions.
“I think a lot of people have adjusted to the fact that we do still have snow on the ground,” Bailey said. “Secondary roads still are somewhat covered. Slick spots. So people are still driving with some sense. That’s the main thing, we push the safety aspect.”
Another round of winter is expected to hit the area Thursday afternoon into Friday morning. Roadways will be slick in spots, with rain and snow likely between 4 pm and 10 pm. Maybe you can get whatever needs to be accomplished before then. That s my plan.
According to the National Weather Service in Pendleton, OR, the Tri-Cities area will receive snow mixing with freezing likely between 10 pm Thursday and 1 am Friday. Little or no accumulation is expected. Although, other agencies reporting up to an inch accumulation is possible. Friday s high will be in the low 40 s, so, the snow won t stay.
As far as driving in snow and ice, slow down. Many people are cited for driving too fast for conditions. Leave extra room between vehicles, alow down when approaching intersections, bridges, off-ramps, and overpasses.
