Sure, it sounds cool enough: Decking over the unsightly train tracks skirting Soldier Field and creating an entirely new neighborhood studded with shiny high-rises, restaurants and shops is an appealing daydream, especially now, when most of us have barely left the confines of our own homes but for an occasional, fully masked run to the grocery store.
That said, the One Central idea pitched by sports-stadium-builder-turned-would-be-neighborhood-maker Bob Dunn seemed like a stretch even before the pandemic. Indeed, the Wisconsin developer s audacious proposal seemed to fade from view since it last made the rounds in 2019. But it just turned up like a bad penny, when Ald. Pat Dowell, 3rd, hosted a virtual town hall on the evening of Jan. 25 to allow Dunn to describe a more detailed version of his plan.

A driver was arrested with a weapon Friday after he crashed into a Metra Electric train during a police chase on the Far South Side.
The driver bolted from cops at 1:45 p.m. when they tried to pull him over for a traffic violation in the 12000 block of South Halsted Street, Chicago police said in a statement.
He made it one block away before he drove around a closed train crossing at 121st Street and crashed into a passing train, police said.
Officers arrested the man, who was taken to Roseland Community Hospital for minor injuries.
The Regional Transportation Authority is planning to use $486.2 million in transit funding from the latest stimulus bill to support transit services to “to the places and people across the region who most need transit” during the COVID-19 pandemic.
Based on the research shared during the RTA’s January 21 board meeting, this would mean Chicago, Joliet, Aurora, Elgin and Waukegan, as well as a handful of clusters in the south, west and northwest suburbs. It would be up to the individual transit agencies the RTA oversees to decide exactly how they would use the cash, and what service changes, if any, they would make.
