A sheer ability to rush the quarterback. That was one purpose. The Cougars added 16 players on the first day of the early signing period, highlighted by a surge of players in the trenches and on the defensive edge. There was 6-foot-4, 225-pound outside linebacker Logan Fano from Timpview, arguably the best pass rusher in the state were it not for fellow signee John Henry Daley, a 6-5, 225-pound senior from Lone Peak. The Cougars also added East defensive lineman Ricky Wolfgramm, a 6-2, 258-pounder who committed to BYU when he was in eighth grade, and Enoka Migao, a 6-5, 240-pound defensive lineman from Temecula, California who signed alongside his twin brother 6-4, 320-pound offensive lineman Elia Migao.

BYU will begin to formally introduce the Class of 2021 on Wednesday when the fax machine is humming and National Letters of Intent begin to roll into the offices of recruiting coordinators Jasen Ah You and Jack Damuni, and many of those recruits won t have to send their response very far. Eight of the Cougars 16 early commits hail from the state of Utah, headlined by Timpview defensive end Logan Fano, a four-star pass rusher by 247 Sports who passed on Arizona, Arizona State, Colorado and Michigan, among others, to stay in the neighborhood.

Light, the top-rated center in Utah and No. 2 overall recruit, signed his National Letter of Intent on Wednesday to play for the University of Oregon, a school where he s been committed for several months. But when he sees Dart, his quarterback for the past year, Fight On may be living inside his head. It s enough to make Light, who also played defensive tackle, consider trying to move to defense for at least one game. Dart a four-star quarterback who held offers from Arizona State, UCLA and BYU signed with USC on Wednesday.

Chargers coach Eric Kjar has been named one of four finalists All-American Bowl Coach of the Year, an award given annually to the top coach in high school football by the All-American Bowl selection committee. Kjar is the only semifinalist from Utah, and the western-most candidate, joining John Kay of North Shore Senior in Houston; Eric Moore of Center Grove in Greenwood, Indiana; and Tom Roken of St. Joseph s Prep in Philadelphia.
