TNRD board to ask provincial government to impose ban on backcountry recreation

On Monday (July 5), the board held a special meeting, during which Kamloops South-Thompson MLA Todd Stone told the board more fires started in the same period in British Columbia during the historic 2017 fire year. However, he noted significance of the size of fires this year, loss of life and Village of Lytton being wiped out. The board considered asking for a provincial state of emergency. TNRD board chair Ken Gillis said such a declaration makes a statement one he thinks the province should have made “long ago.” He also said he is not confident the province could move swiftly, should it need powers allowed through a state of emergency declaration.

TNRD supporting 5A commercial truck ban

(File photo) At the regular TNRD Board of Directors meeting on Dec. 17, 2020, former RadioNL host Bob Price made a presentation on behalf of Stump Lake Ranch and residents along Hwy 5A, requesting that a ban on non-local commercial truck traffic along that route be supported by the TNRD. At the time, the board believed that not enough information had been provided, and were hesitant to commit to a letter of support. Following a presentation by Ministry of Transportation Regional Operations Manager Graeme Schimpf and Commercial Vehicle Safety Enforcement District Manager Glenn Taylor in March, the board once again deferred their decision, although both Schimpf and Taylor indicated that 5A was safe for commercial vehicle traffic.
