Wicked Local
When Michael Hinchliffe first joined the Georgetown School Committee in 2014, it was for a temporary appointment because no one had run to fill a seat that needed to be filled.
He ran unopposed for a full term the following term, and he ran unopposed again in 2018.
But times have changed. With a pandemic having shuttered schools and businesses for months and a potential fiscal crisis looming on the horizon, local elections are packed with new candidates.
Now, Hinchliffe is running for re-election as the incumbent in his first competitive race, and he’s asking Georgetown to keep him onboard to help the schools navigate the uncertainty coming.

GILL Degrading floor tiles in Gill Elementary School have raised safety concerns, and will require a replacement by the town this summer for a price likely over $100,000.
The problem is that the tiles contain asbestos, a material that was commonly used in tiles until the 1980s, when it was found that degrading asbestos can be hazardous if inhaled.
Westport considering town sites for central business office

WESTPORT The town will be getting a new junior/senior high school building on Old County Road later this year, but no decision has been made yet for where the business office will be located.
Right now, the main candidates include keeping the central business office in a portion of the current high school on Main Road or moving the offices to the modular building adjacent to the Macomber Primary School. That building is used for grade 2 classrooms and other Macomber programs. Grade 2 will move back to the Westport Elementary School later this fall when the junior/senior high school opens up. WES will then return to a grades 1 through 4 building.
