And if a journalist called, would you be able to explain it clearly and concisely? Communicating your research to people in your field might be easy, but stripping away the jargon for a general audience is another story. In the Three Minute Thesis (3MT) competition, graduate students compete for monetary prizes by distilling their thesis or dissertation research into a three-minute presentation in front of a non-technical audience with the use of one static slide. Learning to speak plainly about a complicated topic while showing its impact is a skill that will affect students’ futures in unexpected ways. Just ask a few of our 3MT alumni.

Celebrating six years of the VPR Three Minute Challenge 28 Jan, 2021 Assistant Vice President for Strategic Initiatives Ellen Fisher welcomes graduates students to the 2017 Three Minute Challenge. With only three minutes on the clock, 35 Colorado State University graduate students will be presenting their research to a panel of six esteemed judges in the sixth annual Three Minute Challenge, hosted by the Office of the Vice President for Research. The 2021 Three Minute Challenge will be held online via Zoom on Feb. 15 at 1 p.m. Presentations will represent seven colleges and 29 disciplines, including psychology, statistics, anthropology, biology, and more. This event is free and open to the public.

However, being asked to present one’s graduate scholarship in plain language and in three minutes or less? That takes the challenge to a whole new level. The Three Minute Thesis (3MT) is a global competition that calls for graduate students to present their scholarship in just three minutes and with one slide. The Boise State 3MT competition will be a live webinar held at 10 a.m. to noon. on Tuesday, Feb. 2. This event celebrates the exciting research taking place at Boise State and highlights graduate students who are working to find solutions to real-world challenges. The campus community is invited and encouraged to attend the competition.
